The book of Esther could also be called “the book that almost wasn’t” as it was rejected by almost every scholar tasked with assembling the canon of scripture as we know it today. There is no reference to God, angels, a divine message, or any other hint of the heavenly; so why include it? Even Martin Luther, the great Protestant reformer, was a great enemy of this writing. However, this book reflects God as He often appears in life – seemingly silent, but still sovereign. Although there are no thunderings and lightnings from the heavens, the God of covenant still protects His people from certain annihilation.
